week 1 BIG TIME UPSETS
I feel shocked... no three words do a better job of summarizing Week One of the CAFFL season. All three underdogs according to the CAFFL Sportsbook won and left the CAFFL world stunned in the process. The day started with arguably the biggest upset in CAFFL history with the Vipers doing what many believed to be impossible not just beating the Mustangs but doing it in dominant fashion. Right from the first snap something looked off about the Mustangs and Jackson Davis last years MVP was having real trouble reading the Vipers defense. Davis threw a pick six right out of the gate and the Vipers never looked back they would then recover a loose ball on the next kickoff, and before you knew it the score was 20 to 0. The Mustangs first touchdown was finally scored on a bad play, a backwards pass that was scooped up and taken into the endzone. Mustangs had real issues all day on converting big plays which is something they were great at last year and they never got closer than a ten point deficit the rest of the way they would go on to lose 40 to 22. Vipers were a team last year that had a lot of promise but they never lived up to it, on Sunday they looked like a championship contender and this may be a wake up call for not just the Mustangs but the rest of the league to look out for this squad.
Game two on Sunday should go down as one of the best games in this league's history. A matchup between the two expansion teams the Admirals and Sentinels, questions about Scott Kemp's ability at the quarterback position has been questioned all offseason long and on the first drive it looked like the skeptics were right as he threw an interception in the endzone, he would settle down and play much better the rest of the way. the game went back and forth the whole way every score was answered by the other team and the Admirals who were a big underdog going into this game played multiple quarterbacks in the game and had great success in keeping the Sentinels defense out of sorts. The Admirals scored a big touchdown to go up 7 points with under a minute and a half left, and that is when Scott Kemp took over completing multiple clutch passes including a beauty to Jared Williams which was reminiscent of Santonio Holmes in Superbowl XLIII. Scott Kemp was quick to make the decision to go for two and the win despite the fact that the Sentinels were 0 for 4 on two point conversions in the game, Kemp would rollout and make a tough pass in traffic that fell to the ground incomplete. This is the perfect example of why you play the game, a team that no one really gave a shot showed up and was ready to compete and they made more big plays than the Sentinels. Led by some terrific performances by Brad Wesolowski, Payton Hayes, and several others who's to say that the Admirals can't pull off another upset this season.
In the final game on Sunday the Elite faced off against the Bandits, this was seen as the game that was going to be the closest of the day and it looked like that in the first several drives as the score was 13 to 12 and then the Elite stepped on the gas and overwhelmed the team that was seen as the biggest threat to the Mustangs to win the 2022 CAFFL championship. They would score multiple touchdowns that were unanswered while also forcing turnovers and they would roll to a 46 to 29 victory. The Elite never quite lived up to their name last season but they sure put on a clinic Sunday, they have great athleticism and again this is another team that can be there at the end of the season holding the trophy. The Bandits like the Mustangs should not be counted out due to one bad performance maybe this loss can get them motivated for Week 2. Speaking of Week 2 we get even more great matchups, Game one will be the Bandits vs Vipers, Game two Mustangs vs Admirals, and Game three Elite vs Vipers if we can get anywhere close to the amount of surprises we had on Sunday, Week 2 should be another great one for the CAFFL.
