Week 6 Recap
Week 6 of the CAFFL season was a make it or break it week for all 4 teams playing, the prize for the two winning teams was a trip to the CAFFL playoffs. The Elite and Vipers would await the winner of the Bandits vs Admirals and the Mustangs vs Sentinels.
The opening game of Sunday featured two one win teams both with the hope of keeping their season alive. The Bandits wanted to get back into the playoffs for the second straight season while the Admirals wanted to get to the postseason in their first season in the league. The game did not start in the Admirals favor as Russell Reynolds threw a quick pick six to Spencer Wilson, then things would go from bad to worse as the Bandits would recover a loose ball off an Admirals player and would take it all the way for a 13 point lead. The Admirals would have a good drive but would unfortunately turn it over on downs inside the Bandits five yard line, Brandon McWilliams would find Cameron Johler on a deep bomb to make it 20-0. Bandits were again having issues getting their full roster on the field together, as multiple players from the Sentinels and Mustangs would have to compete for the Bandits. Bradley Wesolowski would get a crack at quarterback and he would throw a pick six to Spencer Wilson. The Admirals would strike first in the second half to make the score 27-8, but the Bandits would take back control quickly and win the game 46 to 14. The Bandits will now face the Vipers in a rematch from just a couple of weeks ago, the Vipers cruised to a 52-14 win however the Bandits were missing numerous weapons. The Admirals will look to have a bounce back year in 2023, I'm curious to see if they can add more weapons to their squad in the offseason.
In the finale of Week 6 the Sentinels would face off against the Mustangs, the Sentinels would get the ball first and Scott Kemp would find Noah Theis open in the endzone but on a controversial sack call the touchdown was called off. Later in the drive Arin Natzke would complete a pass to Scott Kemp and he would dive into the endzone but he would be called short of the goal line on a very close call. Reigning MVP Jackson Davis was not on the field again on Sunday so Hayden Gray would be called upon again to step in at quarterback. DJ Hayes would get the scoring going on, you guessed it multiple missed tackles by the Sentinels defense. On the next possession Brandon McWilliams would throw into double coverage and be picked off by Hayden Gray. Gray would then throw a tough pass that was caught by Shelton Smith off of a deflection for a touchdown. Theis would get the Sentinels on the board the a kickoff return for a touchdown making it a 12-6. The defending champs would strike back to go up 12 points as Gray would find an open receiver in the endzone. The Sentinels would try to get aggressive and they would throw their second interception in the endzone. The Mustangs would put one more touchdown on the scoreboard to end the first half with a 20 point lead. Shelton Smith would start the second half with a touchdown to make it 32-6, and then Andrew Davis would join in on the scoring to give the Mustangs a 32 point lead. Mustangs would not let up and would go on to win it 50-24, the defending champs will now have a rematch against the Elite and all eyes across the Flag Football world will be on this game. The Sentinels now must go back to the drawing board as they finish the season winless and are the first team in league history to accomplish this feat.
